South African high-school learners now have the chance to step into the world of investing and compete for serious prize money, thanks to Coronation’s Top Investor Challenge: Schools Edition.
Now in its second year, the free national competition invites learners to manage a virtual investment portfolio through an online simulation game, playable on any phone, tablet or computer. Teams of two to five receive a virtual sum of money to invest, guided by short videos imagining how the world could change in the future.
Based on these scenarios they decide how to allocate their funds, learning financial decision-making fundamentals as they go. “The idea is simple,” said Kirshni Totaram, global head of Institutional Business at Coronation.
“We want to give more young people access to the kind of knowledge and opportunities that can change how they think about money and their future. For some this is their first exposure to investing, for others the beginning of a career in investment management.”

No prior knowledge of investing is required to enter. The challenge is designed to introduce key economic and financial concepts in a practical, engaging way – building financial literacy and confidence in an industry many learners may never have considered before.
The stakes are real. The top-performing team nationally wins R60 000 in Coronation investment vouchers, split equally among members, giving them a tangible first step into real-world investing. Their school receives a further R60 000.
Beyond the prize money, participants walk away with a meaningful addition to their CVs, demonstrating initiative, teamwork and financial awareness.
The challenge runs from Monday 1 June to Friday 31 July, with flexible participation designed to fit school schedules. There is no limit to the number of teams a school can enter.
