The annual Franschhoek Literary Festival returns from Friday 15 to Sunday 17 May, bringing together acclaimed authors, thinkers and readers for a celebration of the power of storytelling.

The programme spans current affairs, fiction, memoir, art, food, history and children’s literature, ensuring something for every kind of reader.

This year’s line-up features both international authors and leading South African voices. Key discussions explore themes with writers like Mike Nicol, Lindiwe Hani, Sheryl James and Nozipho Tshabalala examining politics, identity and personal history.

Festival highlights

In “A Seat at the New South African Table,” popular cookbook authors and digital creators Fehmz, Lila Lerie and Sinoyolo Sifo explore how storytelling through food is helping reshape South Africa’s culinary identity.

Literary highlights include Michiel Heyns leading a discussion on fiction and political conflict, while Dr Rachel Clarke shares the moving true story behind The Story of a Heart.

Sessions on resilience and real-life experience feature Paralympian James. Crime writing is a strong focus, with Nicol introducing a new series, alongside School for Crime.

A major highlight is the expanded children’s programme on Saturday 16 May. Sessions include storytelling with Refiloe Moahloli and Gcina Mhlophe, adventure tales from Riaan Manser, and live illustration with Alex Latimer.

The festival promises a memorable weekend of ideas, stories and connection.
