Charity begins at home, and for “the ladies in blue” that means charity begins at the police station. The regional SAPS Women’s Network had its first session in Stellenbosch on Thursday (11 September), an occasion for policewomen to show their appreciation of fellow members. According to Lt Col Shirleen Nagessur, chairperson of the Cape Winelands Women’s Network, being a woman in the police service means having to wear many hats and being able to multitask. “This is why we have to put God first,” she said. “This is how we start the day. It is important for management to motivate members and foster a mindset of being humble and showing gratitude.” This, she made clear, was very good for morale. “Having happy members means we can serve our communities better. That is why we charity begins at our stations, among our members.” The 23 stations in the region, from Stellenbosch to Montague, are part of the Women’s Network, and will host various events to support and motivate charitable initiatives.
