In what can only be described as a remarkable achievement Stellenbosch mountain bikers Luyanda Tobigunya and Kusaselihle Ngidi represented South Africa at the prestigious UCI MTB World Championships held in Scotland on 6 August.
After an impressive year of racing, the Fairtree DP World Cannondale Race duo earned the privilege to compete in the challenging 100 km course, boasting extreme terrain and a daunting 3 000 m of climbing. Despite it being their debut at this prestigious event, Tobigunya and Ngidi demonstrated their talent and determination, finishing in the top 100 riders in the world.
Ngidi showcased his prowess on the demanding course, completing it with an impressive time of 05:35:13. His tenacious effort secured him the 93rd position overall, an extraordinary accomplishment in such a fiercely contested race. Covering a distance of 95 km at an average speed of 18 km/h and ascending an elevation of 3 051 m, Ngidi’s performance showed a display of raw talent and determination.
Tobigunya, no less brilliant, crossed the finish line just a few minutes later, clocking a time of 05:38:56. His performance earned him the 94th spot overall. Tobigunya’s grit and resilience were on full display as he conquered the challenging course, reflecting his dedication to the sport.
“For both riders, the Fairtree DP World Cannondale Race served as a memorable and invaluable experience,” the team’s manager, Chris Norton, said.
“Particularly for Kusaselihle Ngidi, this event marked his first foray onto the international stage, presenting an opportunity to compete against some of the world’s finest mountain bikers. The exposure and experience gained on this grand stage will undoubtedly fuel his confidence and self-belief in future races throughout the year.
“The demanding race in Scotland will provide both Luyanda and Kusaselihle with an incredible endurance base that will be advantageous in upcoming competitions like Wines2Whales and Race2theSea.”
While Luyanda and Kusaselihle competed on the international stage their fellow riders participated at the XCO Cup Series at the Laborie Wine Estate, on Sunday (6 August).
Ongeziwe (Ongs) Tyapa finished in 01:33:49 and Atlahang Motsokotsi in 01:37:50. The pair put on a great display finishing 12th and 13th respectively.
