The “body” of a man caused a scene in Seafarer Road, Strandfontein, yesterday when he was thought to be dead — until he unexpectedly sat up.
No, it was not the start of a zombie apocalypse or a post-Easter miracle — but a misunderstanding. The man who had fallen asleep under a reddish-orange covering in the middle of a public road reserve had no idea that the exposed sliver of his dead-looking leg would cause the entire area to be cordoned off and police to be summoned.
Laughter ensues
When one resident called TygerBurger about the incident, she was barely coherent amidst her breakdowns in laughter.
“People saw this red bag there with the leg showing,” she said. “They thought it was a dead person and they contacted the police. They came and they cordoned off the area and it took a while because people didn’t want to get too close. It was a whole thing. And (break for laughter) the guy (break for laughter) sat up (long break for laughter).”

In between the woman’s long burst of mirth TygerBurger could just make out that “the guy was sleeping, the whole time”.
The Strandfontein Community Policing Forum’s chair, Sandy Schuter, confirmed the incident on WhatsApp, in between strings of laughing emojis.
Caught on camera
Several passersby caught on camera the moment when the unbeknownst “dead man” woke up and sat up. The footage quickly went viral on local chat groups.
Video and images of the scene show large sections of Seafarer Road cordoned off. The Bayview Road intersects Spine Road, which is a busy thoroughfare, and is opposite a busy garage. It also runs along the False Bay College Strandfontein Campus which is under construction. As a result, the very dead-looking living man gave lots of people front row seats to the spectacle.
In the images and videos, the deathly still plastic covering and protruding leg, is seen contrasted against the backdrop of the green construction fencing of the campus.
The identity and fate of the undead man is not known to TygerBurger, who reached out to the City and police for comment. Neither have replied yet.
