Lansdowne traffic circle to close this weekend for Sky Circle construction

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate will close the temporary traffic circle in Lansdowne this weekend while contractors connect bridge ramps to the Sky Circle and install a new traffic signal system.

No traffic

The closure affects the intersection of Strandfontein Road, Govan Mbeki Road (M9) and Jan Smuts Drive (M17), and will be in effect from 13:00 on Friday 23 October until 04:00 on Monday 26 October. No traffic will be allowed through the intersection during this period, and the public is advised to make alternative arrangements.

“During this closure, the contractor will connect the bridge ramps to the Sky Circle. This is a massive project milestone, and we are excited to see how the engineering feat is now taking full shape. While the closure is in effect, the contractor will also install the new traffic signal system at the intersection. As from Monday, traffic signals will guide traffic through the intersection,” said Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayco member for urban mobility.

“Road users must please use alternative routes and plan for some disruptions, as the closure will impact traffic flow in the area. I want to thank the local community and commuters in advance for your patience and cooperation as we work toward keeping Cape Town moving. There will be temporary signage in place and flag personnel to guide road users, but it is best to avoid this area if possible,” said Quintas.

The project team converted the signalised intersection into a temporary traffic circle in March 2025 to accommodate construction of the Sky Circle. Now that the circle has been cast and the concrete has reached its design strength, the temporary traffic circle at ground level can be converted back to a four-way signalised intersection for all traffic, apart from MyCiTi buses that will use the elevated circle once the service starts operating along this route.

The Sky Circle is about 6,2 m above ground and for the exclusive use of MyCiTi buses. The proposed Hanover Park closed median station is the closest MyCiTi station to the intersection and will serve commuters along the trunk route on Govan Mbeki Road. The station will be built at a later stage, closer to the implementation date of the service.

Significant upgrades at the Govan Mbeki Road and Jan Smuts Drive intersection to improve traffic flow include the reconfiguration of the intersection, dedicated turning lanes, improved traffic signals and signal sequencing and walking and cycling lanes

The project in Lansdowne commenced in July 2022, and the anticipated completion date is April 2027.
