15 lives lost in tragic taxi accident near Graaff-Reinet, Santaco calls for road safety

Santaco will continue to work tirelessly to promote road safety and to support the families of the deceased.


The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of 15 lives in a devastating accident on the N9 near Graaff-Reinet in the Eastern Cape on Monday 16 December.

This accident is a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for all road users to exercise extreme caution.

The minibus taxi belonging to the Khayelitsha based Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) was travelling from Saldhana Bay to Gatyane (Willovale) in the Eastern Cape.

Santaco president, Motlhabane Abnar Tsebe, extends his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.

“We are deeply disturbed by the continued loss of life on our roads, despite our intensified efforts to promote road safety. We urge all South Africans to prioritise safety above all else and to exercise extreme caution when travelling,” he said.

Santaco calls on drivers and all road users to:

  • Exercise extreme caution when travelling
  • Adhere to all road safety regulations
  • Avoid reckless and negligent behaviour on the roads
  • Prioritise safety above all else

They also urge the relevant authorities to intensify their efforts to ensure road safety and to hold accountable those who flout road safety regulations.
