Repair of the collapsed sewer pipes by the City in Makhaza, Khayelitsha is expected to be completed in November.

This comes after the sewer-pipe burst in October last year, leaving residents dealing with flooding. More than 40 shacks were affected, forcing the City to relocate the residents to a safe area.

Community satisfied with progress

Community leader Bonga Tyhulu confirmed everything was going according to plan. He said there were no challenges.

“We are happy with the progress, and the contractor is expected to complete the project soon. We are also pleased with the working relationship with the community. We are also appealing to them to continue to be patient.”

Second collapse discovered

Mayco member for Water and Sanitation Zahid Badroodien explained that the initial collapse that occurred in December 2025 was repaired and work was completed in June this year.

However, he stated that when the line was recommissioned another collapse was identified outside the working area where the contractor had just completed the original repair. He said the contractor was attending to the second collapse.

No interruptions to work

“The contractor has just started work on the second collapse after the necessary approvals were obtained. The works are anticipated to be completed in November 2026, depending on site conditions. The project is on schedule.” Badroodien added no interruptions had affected the work.
