Local development forums have appealed to parents to be gentle with their learners, particularly those learners who were unable to make it in the final exams in 2025. The remarks came after the Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, announced the matric results on Monday 12 January.
They described this time of the year as difficult for the learners, especially those who were waiting for their matric results.
Gugulethu Development Forum (GDF) secretary Vincent Domingo urged all the learners who failed the exams not to lose hope.
“As the GDF, we congratulate all the learners who made it in their matric exams. We wish them all the best. But, our prayers are with those who didn’t make it. We are appealing to them not to do anything stupid. They must stay focused all the time. This is not the end of the world,” said Domingo, adding that they must refrain from thinking of committing suicide, taking drugs or running away from home. Instead, he urged them to continue with their studies.
Domingo urged the government to intervene and provide more resources for township schools.
“Our schools do not have enough equipment for the learners. We need laboratories and libraries in our schools. We need proper schools. If the learners don’t want to go back to school the TVET Colleges are open for them,” said Domingo.
Khayelitsha Development Forum (KDF) secretary Veza Nethi reiterated Domingo’s sentiment that parents need to be there for their children. He expressed his gratitude to the teachers for being there for the learners.
“We want to tell those who didn’t make it that life goes on. They must stand up and dust themselves and continue. There is life after everything,” said Nethi.
He said this is a time for parents to demonstrate their parenthood. He said all that is needed is to support and motivate them.
