Khayelitsha shooting in Site C leaves two dead and two injured


Khayelitsha police have registered two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder following a shooting incident in Site C, Khayelitsha, on Tuesday, 24 March.

The incident occurred at approximately 21:40 in the Taiwan informal settlement.

Provincial police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg said Khayelitsha officers responded to a complaint of a shooting on Tuesday night.

“Upon arrival at the scene, they found four males who had sustained gunshot wounds. Two males, aged 20 and 23, were declared dead at the scene by medical personnel, while the other two, aged 20 and 22, were transported to a medical facility for treatment,” said Twigg.

He added that the incident is under investigation, and no arrests have been made.

Twigg said the motive for the attack forms part of the ongoing police investigation.

A community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal, said he suspected the incident might be related to extortion.

Community reaction to Khayelitsha shooting

“We cannot rule out extortion in this incident. Judging by the way they were killed, they appear to have been targeted. Extortion is a major problem in our communities, and people are afraid to speak out,” he said.

He urged police to leave no stone unturned in their investigation.
