The Khayelitsha Safety and Security Forum (SSF) has condemned the brutal killing of three people at the SST in Makhaza, Khayelitsha, on Wednesday 16 September. The forum called on law enforcement to intensify investigations and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book.

Forum: We cannot normalise the killings

Khayelitsha SSF chair Bonga Zamisa described the incident as disturbing and uncalled for. He said illegal firearms on the streets are a cause for concern.

“We need law enforcement to investigate and tell us what really happened. We can’t speculate, but we want the culprits to be arrested. As the community, we cannot normalise the killings and continue living as if nothing happened,” said Zamisa.

He said their thoughts are with the families of the deceased during this difficult time.

Police: Suspect fled after opening fire on fellow passengers

Provincial police spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk said detectives from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit are hard at work pursuing leads to apprehend a suspect responsible for the death of three men in Makhaza on Wednesday 16 September.

He said Makhaza police registered three counts of murder following a shooting incident at 12:30 on Wednesday on Joe Gqabi Street in Town Two.

“Officers responded to the scene and found the body of a man with multiple gunshot wounds inside a grey Toyota vehicle. About 500 metres from the scene, the body of another man was found with multiple gunshot wounds. Whilst at the second scene, another body was discovered in Tabang Street. Preliminary investigations indicate that all three deceased were inside the Toyota vehicle when another passenger randomly started shooting at fellow passengers,” explained Van Wyk.

The suspect subsequently fled. The deceased have yet to be identified.

He said the motive for the shooting is yet to be determined.
