The Khayelitsha Development Forum (KDF) in Khayelitsha has said it regarded reports of learners having sex in the classroom, with other learners looking on, at Esangweni Secondary School in Kuyasa, in a serious light.

These allegations levelled against learners, a report circulating on social media on Wednesday 9 September has made clear, formed part of a rampant culture of sexual exhibitionism that also includes sex in the toilets in full view of other learners.

KDF chairperson Mawande Jara said he was aware of the report and his organisation would investigate the matter. He said the alleged behaviour was indicative of a broken community.

We have a sick community

“We cannot blame the teachers for our children’s actions. We need to blame our community because these learners absorb the values and behaviour they see around them, which means we have a sick community. We need to call on all community stakeholders and address this problem.”

Department investigating

Western Cape Education Department (WCED) spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said the department had become aware of the concerning allegations through media enquiries and was urgently engaging the school in establishing the facts.

“The matter has not previously been reported to the district, so it would therefore be premature to comment on the specifics at this stage. Should the allegations be substantiated, they will be dealt with through appropriate disciplinary and support processes.”
