Excitement was evident on the faces of the children at Baphumelele Children’s Home in Site B, Khayelitsha when the members of Christ Centred Youth (CCY) from Kraaifontein arrived at the centre with donations on Saturday 30 May. The donations included clothes, food, cleaning supplies and toiletries.
CCY is a non-government organisation focusing on empowering and educating young people while addressing their needs.
CCY executive member Namhla Monakali described the initiative as part of giving back to the community. She said it was the first time the organisation had undertaken such an initiative.
Donations bring smiles to young residents
“As CCY, we are passionate about young people, particularly children. We felt there was a need to contribute to their home and show them love. Some of them are orphans, while others have been abandoned by their parents for various reasons. We wanted to demonstrate that there are people who love and care about them,” said Monakali.
She said the organisation’s objective is to help transform and develop young people into responsible citizens. Monakali added that it is time for young people to take centre stage in bringing positive change to their communities.

Baphumelele welcomes much-needed support
Baphumelele’s managing director, Rosalia Mashale, expressed her gratitude to the CCY members, saying their contribution was a breath of fresh air. She noted that the donation came at the right time and that the home continues to rely heavily on the support of donors.
“We have 120 children at Baphumelele, ranging in age from three months to 18 years old. Our children are referred to us by the City’s Department of Social Development. They were excited to see people visiting them. Some of our children do not usually receive visitors because they do not have families,” she said.
A home sustained by generosity
Mashale added that since the establishment of the children’s home 37 years ago, it has survived through the generosity and support of donors and well-wishers.
