Mfuleni residents are urging the government to deploy more officers, citing escalating crime as worrisome.
This after an off-duty police constable was shot and injured in his house at Extension Six on Monday 26 June, in a suspected robbery.
Resident Siphesihle September described Mfuleni as a dangerous area. She said too many crime incidents happened in the community.
“It seems some unknown men arrived at the officer’s house at night and demanded his service pistol,” she said, adding that the perpetrators also took some of the officer’s belongings.
September highlighted robbery, car hijackings and murders as some of the most common crimes. She appealed for a fully-fledged police station instead of a satellite station.
“There is no police visibility here. You only see the police van when something happens. Mfuleni is too big for a satellite police station,” she explained.
Provincial police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg confirmed the incident. He said Mfuleni police registered a house robbery and attempted cases for investigation.
“According to reports, a 33-year-old victim was at home when someone knocked on the door and asked for directions.
“Four suspects then appeared, pointed at the victim with a firearm, took electronic equipment, a cellular telephone and an undisclosed amount of cash. The victim was shot in the abdomen,” said Twigg. He added the suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.”
Twigg said the victim was a police officer at Kleinvlei Police Station.
