Hundreds of shack dwellers in Ward 86 received flood kits on Sunday 4 August to fix their homes.

The kits included plastic sheets and nail packets.

The beneficiaries were identified during the heavy rains that affected many parts of the province. They come from areas such as Nkanini, Pholile, Ezinkomeni, France Extension and Esilahliwe.

Resident Faniswa Maweni from the Pholile praised the City for the great initiative.

Maweni said the plastic sheet would make a huge difference as her shack was leaking.

“My shack was badly affected and my roof has been leaking since there was a storm. We thank the councillor for doing a great job. Since he became a councillor, we are benefiting in most of the things in the ward,” she said, adding that she now needs a proper house.

Ward 86 councillor Xolani Diniso said the kits were donated by the City’s Informal Settlement Department.

He said the aim is to assist where possible.

Diniso said they could not fold their arms while people were in trouble.

“We handed over 200 plastic sheets and 200 packets of nails at Pholile, 120 plastic sheets and  120 packets of nails at Nkanini, 50 plastic sheets and 50 packets of nails at Esilahliwe, and 90 plastic sheets and 90 packets of nails at Ezinkomeni.

According to Diniso, housing development remains a challenge in the area.
