Flood victims from Ward 86 in Strand were very happy to receive flood-relief kits distributed by the ward councillor on Thursday 14 May. More than 300 residents from Simanyene, Green Point and Pholile informal settlements benefited from the initiative. Each resident also received a plastic sheet and a packet of nails.

Relief kits bring hope to affected families

One beneficiaries, Sisanda Maqhubla from Green Point, said the flood-relief kit would make a big difference. She said what remained of her belongings were damp, while others had been totally damaged.

Flood victims describe damage to their homes

“My shack is full of water. It was leaking through the roof, with water also coming in underneath. My fridge and cupboard are damaged and other items, including beds, blankets and clothes, are wet. Getting this assistance will help me.”

Another resident, Badanile Ndima from Simanyene, said what residents really need is proper housing. He explained that the community has been experiencing flooding during winter rains for many years.

“All these things that the City is giving us won’t change the fact that we are flooding. We are still going to flood again. We need proper houses.”

City provides temporary assistance after floods

Ward councillor Xolani Diniso described the distribution of the flood-relief kits as a temporary solution. Recent floods had caused significant damage to many homes in the area, he pointed out.

“Many shacks have been damaged, including residents’ electrical appliances. As the City we are trying to assist where we can.”
