Flood victims from Ward 38 in KTC were over the moon after receiving blankets donated by Gugulethu police officers, together with members of Nebular Technologies Team (NTT), on Wednesday 20 May. The handover was held at the KTC Community Hall, where at least 40 people benefited from the initiative.
NTT is a global professional team specialising in financial technology.
Gugulethu police social-crime coordinator Sgt Nomapha Homane described the initiative as a way of giving back to the community, a way to build bridges between the local police and the community.
“We want to build trust,” says Gugulethu police
“We want the community to see they are not alone in these difficult times. We want them to know police officers are not only there to arrest people but also to lend a hand when needed. We want to build trust.”
NTT representative Bongiwe Mbaleki echoed Homane’s sentiments, saying the organisation was committed to giving back to the community. She said the team saw a need to assist residents in their time of distress.
NTT expands blanket donations across Khayelitsha wards
“Within two days we donated 200 blankets to flood victims. On Tuesday 19 May we donated 120 blankets to Ward 18 and 40 blankets to Ward 98, both areas are in Site C, Khayelitsha. Today we are here in KTC,” she said.
Beneficiaries express gratitude for warmth and support
One of the beneficiaries, Lungiswa Duna, expressed her gratitude to both NTT and the Gugulethu officers for the initiative. She said the donation meant a lot to the community.
“This initiative may look small to others, but to us it is huge. Some of us do not have decent blankets, so receiving one means a lot,” she said.
