BLOEMFONTEIN – The Free State Boxing Organisation (FSBO) Youth and Elite Championship is scheduled for Saturday 9 May at the Paradise Community Hall in Bochabelo. The upcoming tournament precedes the national championships to be held in the Western Cape, which will feature teams from all nine provinces.
The participating boxers at provincial level – both female and male – will compete on a knockout basis to determine the winners in the respective divisions. The winners thereof automatically qualify for the Free State team that will compete at this year’s national championships in Cape Town in July.
The Bloemfontein-based Devil’s Boxing Club is playing host to the upcoming tournament. The eagerly awaited provincial championship will feature athletes from four districts: Mangaung, Fezile Dabi, Lejweleputswa and Thabo Mofutsanyana. The Xhariep district remains a notable absentee in boxing tournaments, given that the sport has a lack of participation in the area.
The national championship, as annual premier amateur boxing tournament, serves as a key selection platform for national teams competing in international events such as the Olympics and world championships. Winners at the national championship are selected for the national team and an intensive preparatory camp to compete in international tournaments.
The event is scheduled to start at 12:00. Entry is free of charge.
