In a proactive effort to curb the scourge of gangsterism and substance abuse within the learning environment, members of the SAPS Anti-Gang unit (AGU) in Bloemfontein conducted a surprise search and seizure operation at the Dr Böhmer School of Skills on the morning of 10 March.
The operation, which commenced during the early hours of the school day, was executed as part of the SAPS’s ongoing mandate to eliminate criminal elements in schools and ensure a safe environment for both learners and educators.
During the intelligence-led raid, AGU members systematically searched 18 classrooms. The operation yielded significant results, with SAPS members seizing a variety of contraband and illegal items found in the possession of learners. These include various knives and balaclavas, dagga, cigarettes and electronic vapes, as well as quantities of copper wire.

The learners found to be in possession of these items were immediately processed and handed over to the school’s management team for internal disciplinary procedures and intervention.
Sgt Mahlomola Kareli said the police remained committed to its Safe Schools Protocol (SSP) initiative.
“We warn learners that schools are not a haven for criminal activity, and we will continue to conduct unannounced raids at schools to root out drugs and weapons. We also urge parents to play an active role in monitoring their children’s belongings and behavior.”
