A routine crime prevention patrol by Ficksburg police has resulted in a major bust involving suspected rhino horns, unpolished diamonds, and gold, highlighting ongoing wildlife trafficking concerns in the Free State.
The breakthrough came on Tuesday morning, 20 January, when members of the Ficksburg Visible Policing Unit intercepted a white Toyota Alphard during their regular crime prevention operations.
The incident occurred around 2:15 on Einde Street, Ficksburg, near a local filling station. During a search of the vehicle, officers discovered a suspicious parcel concealed in the boot and secured with brown packaging tape.

The vehicle’s driver, a 39-year-old foreign national, told police he had been instructed to transport the parcel from Johannesburg to Maseru in Lesotho.
When authorities unwrapped the package, they made a disturbing discovery: four horns suspected to be from rhinoceros, fifty suspected unpolished diamonds stored in a ziplock bag, and a solid gold item concealed within a medicine container.
The driver was immediately arrested and a case docket opened at Ficksburg Police Station. He faces charges of possession of suspected rhino horns, unpolished diamonds, and gold.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Ficksburg Magistrate Court in due course.
The seizure represents a significant win in the ongoing battle against wildlife crime and illegal trafficking networks operating through the Free State’s border regions.
