BLOEMFONTEIN – The Carel du Toit Special School for audiology and language education in Bloemfontein has opened an interactive sensory garden playground aimed at connecting children with nature and developing spiritual awareness. Carin Taute, the headmistress of the school, said the garden formerly served as a small-scale vegetable garden to benefit learners at this school situated within the grounds of the National District Hospital.
It was officially opened for access on 24 June, allowing for the exploration of a new world of excitement. In line with developing spiritual awareness, the playground is anchored on Psalm 23, a deeply comforting passage of scripture.
“The design connects children deeply with humanity, and teaches empathy and environmental care. It is also a testimony of the school, which started with three children in 2000. It grew in leaps and bounds, becoming the only school in the Free State for children who are hearing impaired and where they could learn to speak,” said Taute. She explained that the playground initially started as a worm farm for children in Gr. 4 and Gr. 5 to learn life skills, and to develop by keeping it in order.

Taute explained that the latest design inspires, soothes and supports children through the power of nature, adding that it enhanced the learning abilities of the children and nurtured environmental awareness.
Creativity has come into full play to complement the interactive playground. It has statues of sheep, musical instruments such as a marimba, and a range of beautiful flowers. In addition, there is a walking trail with diverse textures.

Taute emphasised the importance of the garden, which has instilled environmental stewardship. Caring for the earth teaches children to respect future generations. “It is bigger than the dream we had, and it humbles me to see what we could do with the available space,” said Taute. She expressed great appreciation to sponsors for making the project possible. She said they hosted fundraising events to supplement contributions.
