A strategic collaboration to address dual diagnosis and treatment was signed recently by Bloemcare Psyciatric Hospital and Aurora Addiction Recovery Centre.
This collaboration will ensure better care for individuals facing both mental health and substance use challenges.
Aurora and Bloemcare signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) on Friday 8 May.

This partnership brings together two leaders in their respective fields, united by a shared commitment to improve patient outcomes through integrated, multidisciplinary care.
The agreement recognises the growing need to address mental health and substance use disorders not as separate conditions, but as requiring a coordinated clinical and therapeutic approach.
Current research and clinical experience indicate that more than 70% of individuals seeking treatment for either substance abuse or mental health conditions present with a dual diagnosis – meaning they experience both simultaneously.
This underscores the importance of a holistic treatment model that addresses the full scope of a patient’s needs.

Through this collaboration, the multidisciplinary teams at both institutions will work closely to provide comprehensive, patient-centred care. By combining expertise in psychiatric services and addiction recovery, the partnership will enhance the effectivness of treatment interventions and continuity of care.
Aurora Addiction Recovery Centre plays a critical role in this collaboration as the only inpatient rehabilitation facility in the region registered with the Department of Social Development to provide non-acute medical detoxification for substance users.
This specialised service will significantly support the multidisciplinary team at Bloemcare Psychiatric Hospital, registered with the Department of Health, enabling more effective stabilisation and ongoing treatment of patients with psychiatric needs.
The primary objective of this agreement is to deliver professional, ethical and evidence-based services that improve recovery outcomes and support long-term wellbeing.
Aurora is one of the oldest NPO’s in the Free State with 60 years dedicated experience in substance abuse treatment and rehabilitation.
Bloemcare is a private registered psychiatric facility with 26 years of service.
A collaboration between these two organisation reflects a shared commitment to enhancing standards of care and proactively addressing the growing prevalence of dual diagnosis within the community.
This partnership represents a significant step forward in how they approach treatment.
By working together, they can ensure that patients receive integrated care that addresses both their mental health and substance use challenges in a meaningful and sustainable way.
