BOTSHABELO – An eight-year-old girl from Botshabelo has tragically died in an incident involving a Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality (MMM) water tanker in ward 33. The victim, Olowethu Siyale, was among a number of residents who had gone to fetch water from the tanker on the night of Friday 12 June. The incident occurred at approximately 20:45 as the tanker was leaving the area after delivering water.

Olowethu was a Gr. 3 learner at the Fadimehang Primary School, Section A. Her father, Lehlohonolo Siyale, confirmed the details. She was declared dead at the scene allegedly after the heavy vehicle ran over her. The police have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

Sello More, municipal manager said, the metro was cooperating fully with law enforcement and relevant authorities in the investigation.

“The MMM extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and community following the tragic loss of a child in an incident involving a municipal water truck in ward 33, Botshabelo,” said More. The municipality confirmed that residents in the area had been receiving water via tankers. It emerged the delivery of water via tankers has been ongoing more than a month due to complex challenges.

The funeral service of the victim is yet to be confirmed.
