The small town of Noupoort in the eastern Karoo in the Northern Cape has been transformed into a winter wonderland under a heavy blanket of snow, as a powerful cut-off low-pressure system sweeps across South Africa. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued high-level warnings for severe weather driven by the system, which is expected to persist until Friday, 8 May, with recovery expected during the weekend of 9 and 10 May.
Severe weather characterised by heavy rainfall continues to affect the southern and eastern parts of the country following the impact felt since Tuesday, 5 May, in certain regions of the country. The impact has already been felt in the provinces of the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State and Northern Cape.

Noupoort and surrounding areas, including Carlton Heights, have been blanketed in a thick layer of snow as of today — 6 May. This has extended to the town of Richmond in the Northern Cape. Locals have shared photos and videos on multiple social media platforms, capturing the beauty brought about by Mother Nature, with snow accumulations exceeding 50 cm.
The SAWS warned that accumulating snow could impact mountain passes and travel routes. Snow is also possible by Thursday in other regions, including Johannesburg, according to radar data.
