CAPE TOWN – A 57-year-old member of the Western Cape Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has died following an alleged smash-and-grab incident in Riebeeck Street, opposite an open field in Leonsdale, Elsies River, today (Thursday, 18 June). The incident took place at about 14:00.

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness confirmed the death and strongly condemned all attacks on EMS workers and patients.

Investigation under way

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said Elsies River police have registered an inquest following the incident. He said the man was not shot, and had no visible injuries. He was declared dead at the scene by medical personnel.

A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. The department said it is working closely with the South African Police Service. No arrests have been made.

Family and colleagues supported

The department said it is making sure the staff member’s family has been told of the death, and asked the public to be sensitive and to respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.

Counselling services have been made available to staff following the loss of their colleague. The department extended its sincere condolences to the staff member’s family, loved ones, and colleagues.

MEC speaks out

Western Cape MEC of Health and Wellness Mireille Wenger condemned the attack, saying: “Our EMS personnel are dedicated public healthcare workers who serve communities around the clock, often under challenging and dangerous conditions, to save lives. They must be able to perform their duties without fear of violence. Attacks on those who have committed their lives to caring for others are unacceptable and deeply distressing.”

The department said further updates would be shared as more information becomes available.
