The Petra Feeding Project at Petra Gedenk Primary School in Worcester is the recipient of sponsorship from local estate managers Daniel and Nikki Bouic of Kerala Estate in Bains Kloof. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe are very grateful for the kind gesture that was bestowed on us during this trying time of the global pandemic,\u201d said the principal of the school, Ellen Alexander. \u201cThe lockdown period was very difficult for children coming from rural areas. <\/p>\n
She added the Western Cape government had given the school permission to feed learners, which it attempted to do from late April this year. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe Bouics from Kerala Estate heard about the feeding scheme and wanted to get involved immediately,\u201d Alexander told Standard,<\/i> \u201ca partnership we are very grateful for, and which empowered us to feed our needy children.\u201d<\/p>\n
A team of volunteers and non-teaching staff did not hesitate to give of their time in the weekly project to help feed the children. <\/p>\n
The project has branched out not only to feed the children from our school, but also the surrounding Breede River area. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe Bouic family was a blessing that God sent the children of the school and their ongoing support gives us hope.\u201d <\/p>\n
The partnership enabled the school to feed the children and also give them a food parcel every three weeks. <\/p>\n
Alexander further adds that during the trying and tough times of the Covid-19 pandemic feeding projects, especially at schools, have become an increasing need due to the current economic situation that the country is in. <\/p>\n
She said: \u201cThis has become part of the \u2018new normal\u2019 and therefore we need to look for ways to increase our footprint in the community. Partnerships such as the one we have been blessed with needs to become the new norm.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cOne of our most important values that we try and live our lives by is being connected,\u201d says Nikki Bouic from Kerala Estate, \u201cnot only with ourselves and nature but also with the local community. <\/p>\n
Bouic further adds that when she and Daniel identified the needs of children at Petra Gedenk, without hesitation they wanted to help the project. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a special project to be contributing towards,\u201d she said, \u201cand with guidance and support from our owners we were able to help with daily meals for the children, driven by the schools incredible team.\u201d <\/p>\n
Alexander says the keen interest and willingness to help shown by the sponsors has given them hope that caring hearts indeed still do exist. <\/p>\n
\u201cCommunity involvement is very much close to our hearts,\u201d said Bouic, \u201cand as the managers of Kerala Estate it has been a privilege to work with Ellen and her team.\u201d<\/p>\n
Alexander and her team hope to make a more lasting impact at the school and continue to run its feeding scheme. <\/p>\n
Any excess food not given to the children finds its way to the surrounding community, something that has been welcome. <\/p>\n
