Umzi Online Radio Station stands tall as a beacon of the community voice and empowerment in Zwelethemba. <\/p>\n
Sigqibo Gigi Mrubata, the visionary behind this endeavour, recognised the need for a dedicated platform after being a presenter at a local radio station in 2004. \u201cZwelethemba, with its vibrant spirit, deserved a distinct voice, one that echoed the sentiments and aspirations of its people\u201d said Mrubata. The journey to establish Umzi Radio has not been without its share of challenges. <\/p>\n
Mrubata valiantly attempted to apply for broadcasting rights through communications authority Icasa in 2017. Regrettably, the process was marred by red tape, preventing the station\u2019s progress. Undeterred, a second attempt was made last year, only to be met with the same stipulation: Umzi had to be an NGO with substantial financial backing. Faced with such hurdles, Mrubata decided to pivot towards a digital platform. This shift marked a turning point, allowing Umzi to sidestep some of the traditional barriers that impede local radio stations. The online radio platform officially was launched in October 2022, heralding a new era for community broadcasting.Vuyo Vangqa, Umzi presenter of the Saturday Touchdown said: \u201cWe are vibrant young people establishing what is ours in Zweletemba. What makes us stand out from our local radio station is that Umzi Online Radio is international, because we are online,and are trying to create a platform for young people actually to showcase their talent and keep them off the streets.\u201d<\/p>\n
Umzi\u2019s journey is far from over. The mission transcends mere broadcasting; it aspires to serve the people above all else. This ethos is palpable in the station\u2019s content. The station boldly airs current affairs and police statistics, reggae music, breakfast and the afternoon commuter drive, ensuring the community remains informed, empowered and entertained. <\/p>\n
To continue delivering quality, the station faces a financial requirement of R10 000 from , the South African Music Rights Organisation. Additionally, there is a need for essential equipment upgrades. <\/p>\n
