At the end of 2023 the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) hosted a stakeholder engagement for the rehabilitation of the Kwaggaskloof Dam. <\/p>\n
Located 16 km from Worcester, the dam is being rehabilitated to reinforce safety and its integrity following routine safety assessments.<\/p>\n
The rehabilitation of the Kwaggaskloof project is one of the nine embankments that form part of the greater Brandvlei scheme, an off-river storage reservoir situated in Worcester. The implementation of the project will comprise both mechanical and electrical rehabilitation works. <\/p>\n
Some of the direct benefits associated with this R84 million project when it unfolds include creating much-needed jobs and support of the local small, medium and micro-enterprise (SMME) economy through supply chain procurement opportunities.<\/p>\n
During the engagement James van der Heever of the Construction South division of the department explained some of the bids to be advertised include hiring a security service provider to safeguard the assets, hiring ablution facilities, procurement of the building materials and so on.<\/p>\n
In response to departmental presentations, participants requested the department share information and exercise transparency during the implementation of the project.<\/p>\n
A project liaison committee comprising community development structures will be established to ensure meaningful participation of all the affected and interested parties.<\/p>\n
The stakeholder engagement sessions concluded by asking the SMMEs to verify that they appear on the Central Supplier Database (CSD).<\/p>\n
Environmental legislation is a solid foundation for South Africa. Consequently, an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) will be developed and approved before construction. <\/p>\n
In this way, both environment and resource will be protected during and after construction.<\/p>\n
