Born prematurely at just 26 weeks in 2018, and weighing a mere 800 g, Langalethu, affectionately known as Langa, faced an uphill battle from the very start. His lungs were underdeveloped and his tiny frame struggled to cope with the challenges of life outside the womb.<\/p>\n
For three long months Langa and his family endured the roller-coaster ride of hospital stays, medical interventions, and the uncertainty of what the future might hold. Milestones came and went, overshadowed by the stark reality of his fragile health. But amid the struggles, there was an unbreakable bond forged between Langa and his family, one that would sustain them through the toughest of times.<\/p>\n
When developmental delays became apparent, and concerns about Langa\u2019s well-being loomed large, it was at this time that his mother, Akhanya Chole, began to suspect that autism may well be part of Langa\u2019s story. The autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterised by challenges with social interaction, communication and repetitive behaviours. It\u2019s called a \u201cspectrum\u201d because it affects individuals differently and to varying degrees. <\/p>\n
With a mother\u2019s intuition Akhanya did research.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe road to a diagnosis was not easy. I did my own research as I noticed Langa didn\u2019t like being touched or being dirty, and suddenly didn\u2019t enjoy playing with me anymore, and doctors hesitated to confirm suspicions, citing Langa\u2019s complex medical history and ongoing developmental challenges.\u201d According to Akhanya, with the help of specialists who provided clarity and guidance, finally, at the age of 3, Langa received an official diagnosis of the autism spectrum disorder.<\/p>\n
For Akhanya and her family, the diagnosis brought both relief and a new set of challenges. Autism presented itself in various ways in Langa\u2019s life \u2013 from his dislike of noise and touch to his struggles with communication and social interaction. But through it all, Akhanya remained steadfast in her commitment to her son, determined to provide him with the support and understanding he needed to thrive.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery day brings its own set of challenges for Langa; he is non-verbal so he has his way of communicating. He is not aware of danger so we have to keep the doors locked and be on our guard even when we are outside and the journey is far from easy. But amid the struggles there are moments of joy and progress, as he is learning independence, by feeding and dressing himself.\u201d<\/p>\n
In their quest to support Langa, Akhanya and her family have embraced every opportunity for growth and learning. Speech therapy, sign language, helping him communicate and connect with the world around him in new ways.<\/p>\n
As Langa continues to grow and evolve Akhanya sees a bright future ahead. Despite the challenges he faces, she remains unwavering in her belief in his potential. \u201cits not just with Langa; I believe children on the spectrum will do amazing things in this world; we just have to understand them<\/p>\n
