Situated at PJB Cona Primary School, nestled in the heart of Zwelethemba, a thriving chess club is making waves. Spearheaded by educator Zanoxolo James, the club has blossomed from a small gathering of curious minds to a formidable force in the world of chess.<\/p>\n
Just over a year ago James introduced the game to the students as more than just a pastime. \u201cI saw it as a tool for sharpening minds and fostering strategic thinking\u201d. Despite initial scepticism, a few learners embraced the challenge.<\/p>\n
With only u-11 and u-13 learners, the club embarked on its journey, the players engaged in their first friendly game against Worcester Primary. The spark was ignited and James recognised the potential of his learners.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis year we entered the Cape Winelands District Chess Tournament. I was determined to test their skills on a broader stage. This was followed by a victory, earning us the opportunity to compete in the district championship in Wellington.\u201d<\/p>\n
Of the 11 players representing PJB Cona Aldivash Jamein (13) emerged as a standout talent. With unwavering determination he soared through the competition, securing four wins with only two losses.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to showcase my talents in the competition,\u201d he said. \u201cWith every match I gave it my all and pushed myself. I want to thank my coach, teammates and everyone who supported me throughout this journey.\u201d <\/p>\n
This performance earned Aldivash a spot in the provincial team representing Cape Winelands. Reflecting on the journey so far, James expressed pride in his learners\u2019 achievements. <\/p>\n
\u201cI saw the potential in my learners from the beginning,\u201d he remarked. \u201cBut to witness their growth and success first hand has been truly inspiring.\u201d<\/p>\n
As Aldivash waits for the national ratings James hopes for even greater opportunities beyond South Africa\u2019s borders. <\/p>\n
\u201cAldivash is in Grade 7 and is leaving us this year,\u201d he said. \u201cMy wish is for him to showcase his skills on an international stage. His passion for the game is undeniable, and I believe he has the potential to excel globally.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
