A Grade 11 learner at Zwelethemba High School, Vumisa Nonjiwu (17), has garnered attention for his outstanding contribution to environmental journalism. <\/p>\n
On 28 April, Nonjiwu participated in the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) Youth Reporters for the Environment competition, showcasing the passion and dedication of young individuals towards environmental issues.<\/p>\n
Nonjiwu\u2019s entry, a three-minute film, delved into the pressing environmental challenge of wildfires in the Western Cape. With a keen focus on the impact of fires on biodiversity and global warming, Nonjiwu highlighted the vital role of the fire services provided by the Breede Valley Municipality (BVM).<\/p>\n
Speaking about the motivation behind the project, Nonjiwu said: \u201cWith the help of Jolandi Buck I focused on fires, on how they affect people, fynbos, climate change, and the impact on the greater environment.\u201d He further revealed his childhood aspiration of becoming a firefighter, reminiscing about his time spent as an observer at the Mossel Bay Fire Station during his primary school years.<\/p>\n
Nonjiwu\u2019s winning video comprised an insightful interview, a demonstration of fire drills and compelling introductory as well as concluding segments. Reflecting on his victory, he shared: \u201cI was at school when I saw that I had won. I couldn\u2019t believe it, it blew my mind. This, for me, means \u2018anything is possible if you work hard and smart, and have support around you. We can make it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Looking ahead, Nonjiwu aims to use his platform as a YouTuber to raise awareness of environmental issues, similar to his award-winning entry. Additionally, he plans to pursue studies in journalism to further contribute to the field.<\/p>\n
Nonjiwu\u2019s achievement does not end here; he is set to represent South Africa in an international competition, competing against winning entries from 45 countries worldwide.<\/p>\n
Expressing gratitude for the support he received, he acknowledged individuals who played significant roles in his journey, including Mariet Davids, Jolandie Buck, Daniel Dippenaar and Brandon Nichols, who excelled in camera operation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
