Olifantskrans River Cabins, a beloved family retreat along the Breede River, has permanently closed its doors after being hit by destructive floods.<\/p>\n
Generations of visitors cherished the peaceful beauty of Olifantskrans. But after facing three major floods in just over a year the management announced the closure, effective from 12 July.<\/p>\n
Last year, the cabins faced significant flooding in June and September, reaching water levels not seen since 1981. The latest flood, just 13 months later, left management with no choice but to cease operations.<\/p>\n
In a heartfelt statement, the management expressed their sadness: \u201cThe natural beauty and family-friendly environment of Olifantskrans River Cabins have long been cherished by our visitors. It is with profound sadness that we announce the closure, as we recognise the enduring memories and connections forged within these serene surroundings.\u201d<\/p>\n
Olifantskrans was a haven for families seeking peace in a picturesque setting. The rustic cabins, perched along the river, offered a serene escape for guests and their pets. \u201cMany accommodation options don\u2019t allow pets, but Olifantskrans did,\u201d noted one long-time visitor.<\/p>\n
Management is working to inform guests about bookings beyond the closure date. \u201cAll guests that had bookings have been called and refunded,\u201d confirmed the management team.<\/p>\n
The closure marks the end of an era for the Robertson Valley community and beyond. \u201cThe beauty of this natural paradise was the reason so many visitors returned year after year for peace and quiet, the laughter of children playing in the river, and boundless joy to many pets,\u201d a frequent guest reminisced.<\/p>\n
Last year, after two floods, the cabins were refurbished, and Kol Kol hot tubs were added to all cabins. Unfortunately, the recent flood proved too strong, sweeping the hot tubs away and damaging the cabins.<\/p>\n
The cabins, built above the 100-year flood line and raised from the ground, were still inundated. \u201cThe water washed into all of the cabins, ruining electronics and furniture,\u201d management explained. \u201cThe banks of the river have been completely washed away, leaving deep ravines in front of the cabins and water levels still nearly reaching the front door. Clean-up efforts will begin once water levels subside.\u201d<\/p>\n
