On 15 August the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) hosted a Women\u2019s Month celebration at the Worcester Female Correctional Centre. The event was marked by a significant donation of sanitary pads to the facility, reinforcing the importance of supporting the health and dignity of incarcerated women.<\/p>\n
The head of the centre, Michael du Plessis, welcomed JICS and the \u201cwomen in blue,\u201d emphasising the critical role of skills development for inmates. \u201cWe are in the process of opening a salon for them, not just for the inmates but for the public,\u201d he said, highlighting the centre\u2019s commitment to rehabilitation and reintegration. This initiative is part of a broader effort to equip inmates with marketable skills.<\/p>\n
Twelve inmates have completed a nail and beauty course, a milestone Du Plessis praised. In addition, the centre offers programmes in bricklaying, computer repair and electrical work. \u201cThey laid the foundation for their future success,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
For one inmate currently in the second year of a 10-year sentence, the journey has been anything but easy. \u201cI cried for the first six months,\u201d she confessed, reflecting on the emotional toll of her incarceration. \u201cAll I had to do was try to survive.\u201d Her words underscore the challenges of adjusting to life behind bars and the importance of programmes offering hope and a path forward. <\/p>\n
Capt Nompumelelo Mavata, representing the Women\u2019s Forum Network, underscored the significance of such initiatives. <\/p>\n
\u201cEmpowering women, especially those in correctional facilities, is essential for their reintegration into society,\u201d she stated.
