Motorists driving through Montagu<\/a> can look forward to a smooth ride, thanks to the upgrade of several intersections at a cost of just over R3,6m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Langeberg Municipality<\/a>, this is part of their efforts to improve road safety, accessibility, and service delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The intersection at Bath and Cross Street was transformed from an asphalt surface to a raised, brick-paved road. This finish is more durable and visually appealing and improves safety. The upgrades included new road signs and pedestrian crossings, as well as the replacement of all underground services such as water, sewer and stormwater lines. A section of Bath Street was also resurfaced.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bath and Mark Street intersection was upgraded to a raised brick-paved surface, while the Piet Retief and Cross Street and Piet Retief and Kohler Street intersections were resurfaced and completed after construction.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Willy-John Gordon, senior communication officer at the Langeberg Municipality, the total approved budget for the project was R3 697 794.06.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The upgrades involved the removal of the old road surface and base layers, followed by the replacement of all underground services. Trenches were backfilled in accordance with SANS 1200 standards, and the road layer works were rebuilt to meet provincial and SANS 1200 specifications.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The developer in the Erf 879 development, was unable to provide the required number of parking spaces for the property. A report approved by the Executive Mayoral Committee on 15 June 2021 required the developer to contribute R\u2009361 000 plus a 10% escalation towards the upgrade of the Bath and Cross Street intersection. The project was completed within the approved timeframe. Short extensions were granted to accommodate additional work identified during construction.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 A contractor has also started with the construction of new water pipelines along the R317 Regional Road in Bonnievale. This includes the installation of 670 m of new 355\u2009mm diameter and 35 m of new 315\u2009mm diameter water pipelines \u2013 the pipes will be laid via horizontal directional drilling and by open trench excavation. The value of the project is around R8m with completion planned for 9 February 2026.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal is to strengthen the Bonnievale water supply system, improve water conveyance to the existing Lactalis factory, and reduce operational challenges such as pipe breakages. The project will also support future development by increasing the capacity and reliability of the water network.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 In an effort to stem water losses, the replacement of the siphon pipeline from Muiskraalkop Inlet to Robertson Children’s Home was completed and will ensure improved water pressure and flow, with fewer bursts and leaks.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The project positions the municipality to enter the new financial year with a stronger, more reliable water supply system\u2014supporting broader goals of resource conservation, service reliability, and sustainable development across the Langeberg Municipal region,” it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
