A fresh layer of paint, time and enthusiasm have transformed the majestic steam locomotivie, proudly named “Touwsri\u00advier” (No. 2556) to its former glory.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The town’s iron giant, one of only two remaining of its kind, has just got a makeover fuelled by local heart and generosity.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Touwsrivier Tourism Association<\/a> sponsored the paint, brushes and rollers, turning a simple repaint into a full-blown community restoration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A team of dedicated volunteers, working with record speed and infectious optimism, tackled the job under the expert supervision of Frankie Coetzee, Assistant Superintendent of Public Works in Touwsrivier.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The once-broken “2556” numberplates have been expertly repaired and now glisten in their signature vibrant red, and the window frames are shining bright.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This steel colossus is more than just metal; it is the embodiment of the town’s identity as the “Gateway to the Karoo”, the first town in the Karoo when travelling from the Cape.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having hauled prestigious trains like the Blue Train for decades, this community repaint of the locomotive preserves the heritage that means so much to every railway worker, resident and former resident.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Touwsrivier’s heritage<\/a> is closely linked to the development of the railway in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sporting its shiny new look, “Touwsrivier” is ready for the holidays. In the coming days, the locomotive will be dressed up in sparkling festive Christmas lights, setting the stage for the highly anticipated Touwsrivier Tourism Association Christmas Market on Friday 6 December.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
