Two West Coast schools joined this year\u2019s Global Wind Day celebrations, taking part in competitions and learning about clean wind energy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Participants entered the Umoya Energy wind farm\u2019s arts competition, producing mixed-medium models and posters demonstrating wind energy production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mogamat Swartz, Grade 5 learner from Langebaan Primary, said, \u201cThe Global Wind Day competition helped me to learn about wind energy, which I found very interesting and after a great deal of research and fact gathering, I was inspired to create a model for my arts project.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mogamat was just one of the many learners from Langebaan Primary and Hopefield Primary, ranging between Grades 1 to 9, that were enthusiastic about rolling up their sleeves to get creative. They were invited by Umoya Energy to participate and received information on how wind energy is produced and the benefits of renewable energy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are all very proud of our projects and all that we have learnt about wind energy, especially the role that it plays in our lives,\u201d added Swartz, who was one of the learners to receive a prize. Prizes were education based and age appropriate, including scientific calculators, mathematical sets, edu-puzzles and art equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe were very impressed with the learners\u2019 creativity and all the thought that went into their Global Wind Day posters, which demonstrated their understanding and interpretation of how wind is used to produce clean, sustainable energy,\u201d said Veronique Isaacs, regional community operations manager for Umoya Energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Global Wind Day is a worldwide event that occurs annually on 15 June. It is a day for discovering wind, its power and the possibilities it holds for change in our world.
