The Department of Energy has plans to station a floating power plant in the port of Saldanha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A floating power plant could be a power barge or a self-propelled power ship. This forms part of the government\u2019s plans to provide alternative sources of electricity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Locally concerns have been raised about the possible increase in air pollution since it is expected that the ship will burn fuel or gas which are high in sulphur and produces sulphur dioxide and a variety of other pollutants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The draft scoping report for the project was released for a 30 day comment period in November 2015. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In order to meet the administrative requirements of the Department of Environmental Affairs and the environmental impact study regulations of the National Environmental Management Act, the report was re-released for public review and comment for the period from 10 February to 11 March. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The report is available on the project website: www.erm.com\/gastopower. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Comments have to reach ERM, the environmental consultants on the project, on or before Friday 11 March. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
