People often question how saving for the future is even remotely possible, when so many have to get by on salaries that don\u2019t seem to take the costs of living into account. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Statistics from Trading Economics indicate that the Household Saving Rate in the country dropped from 0,20% in the third quarter of 2018 to a low of -0,50% in the fourth quarter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
July being Savings Month, African Unity founder and Executive Director Herman Lombard believes everyone should make an effort to spend less and save more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no doubt that this is a tall order for the majority of South Africans,\u201d he says, \u201cbut with a shaky SA and global economy we all have to try. Every cent not spent will eventually result in a saved sum of money. The key is to get started!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lombard has the following tips for saving on a low income:.<\/span> Pay high-interest debt first: High interest rates from personal loans often lead to ridiculous additional fees and charges. Pay your debt and try not to accumulate more..<\/span> Set limits on your debit and credit cards: This will help prevent impulse purchases..<\/span> Try to cut housing costs: Housing takes up a huge chunk of your money. For example, putting lights and geysers off when not in use can help you save on your electricity bill..<\/span> Consider switching banks: Find out which bank has the lowest fees, and whether they have perks to take advantage of..<\/span>Avoid buying takeaways or eating out: Prepare all your meals at home and pack lunch for work. .<\/span> Monitor your bank statements religiously: Make sure you are aware of all deductions from your account..<\/span> Have a \u201cside hustle\u201d: An extra job over weekends, such as waitressing, doing make-up or a delivery service can be helpful. .<\/span> Plan your shopping: Impulsive shopping sprees should be a no-no. People are always shocked at the amount of money they\u2019ve spent when it\u2019s all over. It\u2019s better to work with a written budget every month, to prevent money leaks from happening..<\/span> Try the 50-20-30 rule: Set up a budget with three spending categories. Fifty percent of your income should be spent on rent, utilities, groceries and transport, with 20% on savings, investments and debt. The other 30% can be used for other things you want but don\u2019t need. You need to be realistic here, though, so try to add more to your savings. It\u2019s more important than instant gratification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAlways remember, diligence is key!\u201d Lombard advises. \u201cThere are many ways to save money, but you need to be persistent and commit to following through, to reach your long-term saving goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cLastly, don\u2019t get too excited once you notice the results from the savings techniques you\u2019ve
