Statistics show that only 30% of the world\u2019s science researchers are women, and women students in science fields number only 35%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is why Sasol is helping more girls enter the fields of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) by providing bursaries for tertiary education. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is a startling statistic, but it also means there are incredible opportunities for women to enter the STEM fields at this exciting time, where technology continues to transform the way we live,\u201d said Monica Luwes, Manager of the Graduate Centre at Sasol Corporate Bursary Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Luwes adds that career fields in STEM are regarded as the driving force behind technological transformation and innovation, and will be among the most high-paying in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sunday was International Women\u2019s Day, and as encouragement for girls to enter the STEM field, Sasol is offering and encouraging female learners to apply for its all-inclusive bursary programme that focuses on STEM-related courses at a tertiary level. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lehlogonolo Letshela, who is studying for a BSc in Chemical Engineering at the University of Cape Town through a Sasol bursary, says she plans to bring value to her community with her STEM studies. \u201cI have always loved maths and science, and fortunately throughout my school life I\u2019ve had teachers encourage me to pursue these subjects,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYoung women need great mentors, and I\u2019m hoping I can bring value to them and the community around me.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Zaina Abrahams, who is pursuing a BEng (Mechanical) at the University of Cape Town, says the Sasol bursary enabled her to follow her dreams. \u201cAside from the financial support, Sasol really offers a hand-in-hand partnership through their bursar support programme,\u201d Abrahams explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This includes tutors and psychologists as needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sasol bursaries are open to learners who are planning to pursue a BEng or BScEng in various engineering disciplines or for a BSc in Chemistry, Geology or Metallurgy in 2021. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The bursary covers tuition fees, accommodation, meals, textbooks and pocket money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bursars also receive allowances for study tools such as laptops and calculators, and financial and career assistance as part of the Graduate Development Programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
