Trash will
\nsoon become treasure in Clanwilliam thanks to a partnership between EcoBricks,
\nCederberg Municipality and the local community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friday (19
\nNovember) sees the launch of the Clanwilliam EcoBricks Challenge through which
\nEcoBricks will be created from plastic waste. The project aims to address the
\nwaste issue facing so many communities and provide local residents with the
\ninvaluable opportunity to come together and effect far-reaching beneficial
\nchange for themselves and generations to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFriday is
\nalso \u2018World Citizen Day\u2019,\u201d says Michelle Korevaar, founder of ChangeMakers Hub
\n\u2013 the non-profit organisation spearheading the Clanwilliam EcoBricks Challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis day
\nreminds us how our actions as individuals impact our global human family and
\nhow many small ripples can add up to the wave of change that we need to help
\nboth people and the planet prosper.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The
\npartnership with the Cederberg Municipality will conclude on 31 October 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According
\nto Acting Municipal Manager, Andries Titus it important to remember local
\ncommunities are part of a global landscape. \u201cAs a municipality we mustn\u2019t fail
\nto forget that we form part of the global community. This project will serve as
\na gateway into that very same community and will guarantee that our voice in a
\nfight for a healthier ecosystem will be heard,\u201d Titus said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The
\ninitiative will see the EcoBricks used to build a legacy garden in the town,
\ncomplete with benches \u2013 \u201ca living tribute of the exceptional achievements that
\ncan happen when people come together for good and to provide a neutral and
\nsacred place to focus on our togetherness despite our differences\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal
\nis to use 20 000 EcoBricks to build the garden benches, thereby turning 40 000
\nlitres of compacted plastic into something beautiful and of value to the
\ncommunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are in
\nfull support of not only the project itself but in particular the opportunities
\nit unlocks such as skills development, employment, tourism sector development
\nand the beautification of our towns,\u201d says Titus. \u201cThis is something our local
\ncommunities can be proud of and the legacy garden will serve as a monument for
\ndays to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bradley
\nZass, Tourism Development Officer comments that the project is also a way to
\nraise awareness of the deteriorating ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To
\nencourage and inspire the local community, ChangeMakersHub will award weekly,
\nmonthly and quarterly prizes with a grand finale prize awarded to the most
\nactive citizens at the end of the challenge<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe invite
\nall members of Clanwilliam \u2013 its citizens, schools, business and all other
\nentities and organisations within the area to commit to and take part in this
\nground-breaking initiative for the betterment of all,\u201d says Korevaar. In the
\ncoming weeks and months various initiatives will be rolled out within the area
\nto empower, upskill and assist community members as they take up the challenge
\nto turn waste to treasure, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
