Two suspected thieves were arrested this week for attempting to steal infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Monday (20 June) members of the West Coast K9 Unit were alerted by a staff member at a steel company to suspects busy stealing copper cables at a Telkom site in Saldanha Bay. The suspects attempted to evade arrest and hid in the nearby bushes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to police a search was conducted with K9 patrol dog Keyo assisted by a drone. A 32-year-old suspect was apprehended and found in possession of a knife, a hacksaw and copper cables with an estimated value of R10 000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Once charged, the suspect will appear in the Vredenburg Magistrates\u2019 Court on charges of possession of stolen property and destroying essential infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This week\u2019s success came after a similar success from the K9 Unit. Cooperation between West Coast K9 Unit and security personnel led to the arrest of a suspect (30) for possession of stolen goods and tampering with essential infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Friday (10 June), at 06:15, an officer attached to the West Coast K9 Unit received a complaint about people busy stealing copper cables near Saldanha Steel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The suspects were monitored via security cameras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One suspect was arrested with cables around his body and shoulders. The officer went back to the crime scene where he observed the damage to the infrastructure. It appeared to be Telkom cables, which was confirmed by a Telkom technician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The damage to the infrastructure from where these cables were stripped was estimated at R200 000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The copper stripped from the infrastructure is sold for next to nothing to legal and illegal scrapyards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A warning is issued to all scrap dealers that they are criminalising themselves when they continue to buy copper without verifying the source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The suspect appeared in the Vredenburg Magistrates\u2019 Court on Monday (13 June) on the above-mentioned charges.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
