Enthusiastic young scientists seized the opportunity to exhibit their remarkable scientific and innovative research projects at this year\u2019s regional final of the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists in the West Coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A notable turnout of 140 learners from Grade 4 to 12 from the region gathered to present their research projects at the event held between Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 August. The evaluation of the 98 projects on display was carried out by 48 judges, comprising educators, specialists, scholars and avid Eskom Expo supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This regional expo marked a significant milestone, being one of 38 regional expos held across all provinces in South Africa. This year witnessed an impressive influx of entries in the category Environmental Studies, with 22 innovative projects submitted. Furthermore, notable participation was observed in categories such as biomedical and medical Sciences and Social Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
West Coast Region Science Fair Director, Ursula Boys, emphasised that the region celebrates a decade of science excellence and innovation. Margo Adonis, an alumna, currently working at Department of Water Affairs and Sanitation was one of the guest speakers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Saldanha Bay Executive Mayor Andr\u00e9 Truter and Junior Mayor Daniella van Niekerk also motivated the future young scientists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The exceptional young minds who were awarded the prestigious Eskom Special Awards at the region\u2019s awards ceremony were: .<\/span> Best female: Nina Schwartz from Hopefield High School.<\/span> Best innovation: Thiedu du Preez from Vredenburg High School.<\/span> Best energy project: Chelsea Collair & Eunique Africa from Vredenburg High School.<\/span> Best development project: Robyn Van Rooi and Zinhle Mali from Diazville Primary School<\/p>\n\n\n\n Special prizes were awarded to:.<\/span> Top Junior Project: Lisa Raath from Curro Langebaan Private School .<\/span> Top Senior Project: Nina Schwartz from Hopefield High School<\/p>\n\n\n\n Furthermore, a total of 51 learners received bronze medals, 14 were awarded silver, and eight received the highly esteemed gold medals. Notably, learners from Hopefield High school secured the highest number of gold medals, and overall medals at the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Eskom Expo Executive Director Parthy Chetty said: \u201cEskom Expo contributes to the overarching strategy to foster skills development, science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and innovation (STEMI) at the school level, finds its cornerstone in the event we are here to commemorate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe extend heartfelt congratulations to all the medal winners and offer our sincerest wishes for even greater achievements at the much-anticipated Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Advancing learners from the region will have the opportunity to compete against the country\u2019s most exceptional young scientists at the ISF, scheduled for October. <\/p>\n\n\n\n This prestigious event offers participants the chance to win prizes, bursaries, scholarships, and various other opportunities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Moreover, learners stand a chance to be selected to present their research and innovations at international science fairs held in the United States of America, Asia, Europe, and across Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The
