In a vibrant display of community spirit and environmental stewardship an enriching composting training session was held on 17 April 2024 in Louwville, Vredenburg. This initiative aimed to equip 16 dedicated community members working in various community gardens with the knowledge and skills needed to foster sustainable gardening practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Melanie Ludwig of ZTL Organics, a passionate advocate for organic gardening, guided participants through two essential composting methods. Firstly, she demonstrated the use of home-composter units, making composting accessible to households of all sizes. Secondly, she showcased the construction and usage of a DIY three-unit composter crafted from pallets, providing an affordable and efficient solution for larger-scale composting needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The impact of this training session extends beyond the confines of a single garden. Memoranda of Agreement were signed between Saldanha Bay Municipality and community gardens across Langebaan, Louwville, Laingville, and Lapland. Furthermore, similar community initiatives are flourishing in Stompneusbaai, Jakkalsfontein, Hopefield, and Middelpos primary school, reflecting a widespread commitment to sustainable living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the journey towards sustainable gardening doesn\u2019t end with knowledge alone it requires ongoing support and resources. How can you help? Community gardens, the heart of this green movement, welcome any form of assistance, whether it\u2019s the donation of items like empty paint buckets, shade netting, fencing, poles, seeds, tarp or gardening equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Water scarcity poses a significant challenge in our region, underscoring the importance of water conservation measures. Residents are urged to contribute by bottling and bringing their used bathwater for garden irrigation and repurposing dishwashing water for compost heap hydration. Additionally, households are encouraged to redirect their food waste to community gardens, enriching compost heaps and closing the loop on organic waste disposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As Composting Week approaches, from 5 to 11 May, residents are encouraged to embark on their composting journey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
By starting today compost will be ready to nourish gardens when spring arrives, ensuring bountiful harvests and sustainable landscapes for the community to enjoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
