‘A voice in our future’\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tsotello Nenzinane (19) from Saldanha said he is eager to vote for the first time. “I can directly have a say in the future of my country,” Nenzinane said. “I believe young people should be part of the decisions that affect our lives instead of leaving everything up to older generations.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that voting represents more than just a civic duty. “The right to vote means having a voice. A lot of people before us fought for that right, so I think it’s important not to take it for granted.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not all young residents share his enthusiasm and mention scepticism amid broken promises. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maxine Davids (25), also from Saldanha, said she remains undecided about whether to participate in the upcoming election. “I really feel that if I could see every leader doing what they are supposed to do, then I would vote,” Davids said. “Our ward councillor receives thousands a month, but when we call or contact about issues in our community, such as streetlights not working or electricity being off for several days after rain, he never shows up. They are paid to serve us.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

School leadership sparks civic awareness\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thehan Barnard (18) from Hopefield said his role as head boy has shaped his understanding of democratic participation. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“As head boy of Hopefield High School, I have firsthand experience of how important voting processes are when learners elect their Student Representative Council and head leaders,” said Barnard, who plans to register when he gets the opportunity. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“This has made me realise that every vote can make a difference and that it is important to use your vote to have a say in the future.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
