{"id":301254,"date":"2026-06-04T15:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-04T13:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/weslander\/?p=301254"},"modified":"2026-06-04T10:53:41","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T08:53:41","slug":"port-owen-yacht-club-celebrates-end-of-sailing-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/weslander\/port-owen-yacht-club-celebrates-end-of-sailing-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Port Owen Yacht Club celebrates end of sailing season"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As the West Coast&#8217;s familiar summer winds make way for colder days and approaching winter fronts, another sailing season has come to an end at Port Owen Yacht Club.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members marked the occasion on Saturday 30 May with the club&#8217;s traditional closing cruise in near-perfect weather conditions. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/weslander\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Afleetofvesselssaili_17813.jpg\" alt=\"A fleet of vessels sailing during the end of the sailing seoson at Port Owen.\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A fleet of vessels sailing during the end of the sailing seoson at Port Owen.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A fleet of vessels departed from Port Owen, sailed past Rooibaai and circled Commodore Bruce Quayle&#8217;s vessel in salute before continuing via Laaiplek Harbour and back to the yacht club.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weslander joined Derek (73) and Sharyn (71) aboard their Ocean 31 yacht, Reflexion.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Sharyn, sailing has been part of her life since childhood. Having sailed with her parents from the age of nine, she describes it as a unique connection between people, the wind and the sea.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Derek, who originally preferred rugby and cars, met Sharyn when he was 19 years old. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/weslander\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/SharynandDerekRobins_17908.jpg\" alt=\"Sharyn en Derek Robinson.\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sharyn en Derek Robinson.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The couple has been sailing together ever since and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their passion for sailing has also been passed on to their son, Brad, who completed the prestigious Cape to Rio yacht race.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There is no other place like Port Owen and the West Coast,&#8221; Derek said. &#8220;The weather and ocean conditions are ideal for our way of life, and sailing is our life.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among their many adventures, the couple sailed from Port Owen to Cape Point via Valsbaai on three occasions. Derek also spent 27 days at sea in 1992 while sailing a yacht back to South Africa from Rio de Janeiro.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the cruise ended, Derek paid tribute to the volunteers of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), whose crews assist sailors in distress at sea.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/weslander\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Thebeautyofsailingca_21440.jpg\" alt=\"The beauty of sailing captured during the end-of-season sail at Port Owen: Skipper Dean Richard on his yacht Windward.\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The beauty of sailing captured during the end-of-season sail at Port Owen: Skipper Dean Richard on his yacht Windward.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The celebrations continued later that evening with a &#8220;How the West Was Won&#8221; cowboy-themed party at the clubhouse.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Established in 1985, Port Owen Yacht Club has grown from 72 members to more than 400 and remains a vibrant part of the local boating community.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking in true Western style as &#8220;Bad Buck Bruce&#8221;, Commodore Bruce Quayle said the closing cruise marked the end of another successful season. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/weslander\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/CommodoreBruceQuayle_17918.jpg\" alt=\"Commodore Bruce Quayle and Vice-Commodore Jeff Hampton. \" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.7619128817237638;width:768px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Commodore Bruce Quayle and Vice-Commodore Jeff Hampton. \nPhoto: Letitia Van Zyl-Schultz<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He thanked members for their enthusiasm and highlighted events such as the Festival of Lights and the upcoming Winter Wonderland on 13 June.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quayle also expressed his passion for introducing young people to sailing and praised the work of the Saldanha Sea Cadets and Saldanha Sailing Academy.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vice Commodore Jeff Hampton will now take over the reins.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having retired two years ago, Hampton describes Port Owen Yacht Club as &#8220;one big family&#8221;. Fittingly, he named his vessel Never Look Back.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Once you come to Port Owen and become part of this beautiful family, you will never look back,&#8221; he
