{"id":296184,"date":"2026-01-23T10:38:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-23T08:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/weslander\/?p=296184"},"modified":"2026-01-23T13:19:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T11:19:12","slug":"one-drink-no-drive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/weslander\/one-drink-no-drive\/","title":{"rendered":"OPINION | One drink, no drive \u2013 plan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Transport Minister Barbara Creecy announced plans to amend Section 65 of the National Road Traffic Act to introduce a zero-tolerance policy that would prohibit any alcohol consumption before driving.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the West Coast locals shared their views on the proposal.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Lauren Matthews (28) from Velddrif she supported the drinking-and-driving ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The zero-tolerance approach removes ambiguity, which is currently an issue with the allowance of a small blood-alcohol concentration. This decision is tough but necessary and could save countless lives on South Africa&#8217;s roads.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matthews added that the ban should be paired with public-awareness campaigns and increased investment in public transport, especially in smaller towns where Uber or shuttle services are not widely available.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For the West Coast, the ban could be transformative. The region has long stretches of rural highways where accidents are often severe. A zero-tolerance ban could drastically reduce fatalities and lead to safer communities. However, it would require proper support systems. Having a limit still encourages drinking and driving.
