\n Saturday 4 March saw residents once again taking to the streets to create awareness of violence and to say the community has had enough. <\/s1>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n The march comes after a series of murders \u2013 not all gang-related \u2013 between 13 and 19 February. Residents took to social media to air their concern and the Facebook Page Atlantis anti-gansterism campaign was started, which led to the inception of the community march. <\/s1>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n Although lots of interest on social media, the march which commenced at Grosvenor Avenue in Avondale, down Gardenia Street, then down Magnolia Street in Protea Park and onto Reygersdal Drive to the Atlantis Police Station, was poorly attended. <\/s1>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n Organiser Carl Brown says he was a bit disappointed by the turn-out as many residents felt strongly about the violence, but understands some residents are fearful.<\/s1>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n \u201cFor our next march, I would like to see more community members present,\u201d he said. <\/s1>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n \u201cEnough time will be given so we can mobilise as many people as we can.\u201d<\/s1>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n Residents also had an opportunity to sign a petition \u2013 these petition forms were also sent to community organisations and churches for signatures \u2013 and will be handed to the police this week.<\/s1>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n Participants of the march included family members of Rubeena Booley, who was murdered in her home in Gazonia Street two years ago and<\/s1>
\n Sub Council 1 chairperson Cynthia Clayton.<\/s1>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n According to Brown, there has been some success with the establishment of neighbourhood watches in areas where there were none. <\/s1>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n He would also like to initiate a youth programme to keep youngsters occupied, but will need the support of the community.<\/s1><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
