Local youth were recently encouraged to make a \u201cmeaningful contribution\u201d and play an active role in the future of Atlantis during a youth conference held on Saturday 5 October at the Atlantis Dunes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event was organised thanks to a partnership between the Mayoral Urban Regeneration Programme (MURP) and the West Coast Youth Forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With a responsive robot used for illustrative purposes, the youth attending it got to learn about coding, the language of computers, how it works and how integral it has become to life, without many realising it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This presentation was made possible by Edro Educational Robotics, a company focused on robotics education and coding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCoding is the future that will build the fourth industrial revolution, and take communities into the digital age,\u201d said Sarina Jordaan, director at Edro. \u201cLearning coding will ensure youth are equipped, prepared and ready for a tech career, upskilled and job-ready for the digital world with a potential to earn a top salary.\u201d Entrepreneurship as alternative to job seeking was stressed. There is a need particularly among young people to create their own opportunities, especially with the Atlantis Special Economic Zone about to take off, explained Peter Stoffberg, founder member of Atlantis Tech Hub and West Coast Youth Business Chamber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To this end, young people will also be assisted with code 14 driver\u2019s licences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event\u2019s organiser, Stoffberg is geared towards youth development and has assisted with various entrepreneurship readiness programmes, by fostering company partnerships on business training and support services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Youth at the event seemed optimistic about change and opportunities. The hope is for the government to better understand the needs of youth of Atlantis and surrounding areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe City of Cape Town and youth organisations will meet in two months to wrap up the final plan and start executing all approved programmes for Atlantis youth with the backing of the Murp project and budgets,\u201d said Stoffberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
