Pella recently resounded with the harmonies of choral voices and the \u201coompapas\u201d of brass bands marking a very special occasion, the 150th anniversary of an institution around which the place developed \u2013 its Moravian mission station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The weekend of 25-27 October marked the culmination of a series of special events, coinciding almost exactly with the town\u2019s founding date of a century and a half ago. Friday evening saw a local talent show, in which it was able to showcase such commendable acts as its Male Gospel Quartet, colourful Christmas Band and Moravian Brass Band. Heating things up were Tashna B & Crew, a local hip-hop\/rap\/dance sensation with much promise. On Saturday there was a display of local drum majorettes as well as an exhibition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The weekend ended with an early Sunday morning procession led by church brigades and choirs, including the Kaap-Wupperthal Basuinkoor, to the old Johannes Chapel (\u201cthe old church\u201d) where morning service was held. A communion service was held in the afternoon where bidding prayers were offered by the community and on their behalf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another commemorative event, which enjoyed tremendous success, was the Pella Moravian Church\u2019s 150th Anniversary, Music & Dance Extravaganza, which took place at the Baxter Theatre in Rondebosch, earlier this year. It featured several renowned performers including renowned stand-up comic Riaad Moosa and well-known singer Karin Kortje. Also featured were The Guguletu Tenors, the Tierra Flamenco Dance Group, the US Big Band jazz band, the Pillars of Glory Choir and brass bands, including the very impressive Moravian Brass Band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A statement from the local Moravian church says staging such a concert, which was long in the planning and organising, could more publicly and visibly showcase Pella\u2019s own unique brand of creative talent \u2013 its own homegrown artists who could put Pella \u201con the map\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It also presented a good opportunity for involvement with other artists and performers, and of course for them to share in rejoicing Pella\u2019s landmark commemoration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Baxter show formed one of a series of other smaller commemorative events, also intended as fundraisers, boosting Pella\u2019s meagre coffers to help, for instance, the local school buy much-needed musical instruments, renovate dilapidated church buildings and fund forthcoming events. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After the show, which attracted a 600-strong audience, resident pastor Rev Joy-Faith Kronenberg received a standing ovation for organising and producing what turned out to be a truly \u201cgreat community event\u2019\u2019. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
