Three months after a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Think Wi-Fi and GreenCape to deliver Wi-Fi-enabled solar street lights in Witsand, Atlantis, the first Wi-Fi hotspots have been installed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn collaboration with GreenCape\u2019s Alternative Service Delivery Unit, we\u2019ve been working hard at providing Wi-Fi to residents of the Witsand area,\u201d said Marnus Kruger, Think Wi-Fi CEO. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe have deployed 10 access points throughout the Witsand community that have gone live. Currently, we are providing access to more than 2 000 people per day.\u201d The company\u2019s innovative business models allow for both infrastructure and connectivity to be funded without the end-user paying a cent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kruger says Think Wi-Fi is active in 161 locations across the City, and its mission is to empower people, work with local communities to find employment solutions and with organisations to bring digital skills education to each community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said through a co-design process with GreenCape\u2019s Alternative Service Delivery Unit (ASDU) and the Witsand leadership the concept of adding solar light to Wi-Fi connection points was discussed. Think Wi-Fi had already started the process of embracing this innovation in its service offering, which will be deployed when lockdown regulations allow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is resilient urbanism, which embraces the everyday urban reality, and which explores means of improving what already exists in an incremental way, and creates the space for true innovation and resilience,\u201d said Jack Radmore, Energy Programme Manager at Green Cape. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
From this process, the Witsand community prioritised area lighting and connectivity as its most pressing energy-related needs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
